Eco Living
Over the last couple of years I feel like I have managed to fully veganise most of my live from diet, to toiletties and make up to house hold products but simply seeing that the product is labled vegan and cruelty free doesnt mean that it is good for the envirnonment, in fact it is a minefield, there are parent companies to consider, where the ingredients are sourced from, e.g Mica and also there are plenty of harsh chemicals which aren’t good for the environment- take bleach for example! this has got me thinking about what swaps I can make to include being eco friendly as well as kind to the animals

I’ve decided to focus on my cleaning products first, I have been reducing my plastic consumption for a while with the beauty products I buy for myself and my family but its not just the packaging which worries me when it comes to what I wash my clothes and clean my house with but the effects this going down the drain has. For example many of us probably don’t think twice about fancy smelling disinfectants and washing up liquids which are marketed as Vegan but are in fact harmful to aqauatic life, especially when used un diluted.
Swap : Ecover powder for Eco Eggs
I have been looking at Eco Eggs low key for a while unsure whether to take the plunge. What swayed me to finally try them was when I recieved my first Eco egg my my Vegankind box about a year ago, and even then it stayed in its box for a little while. Once I tried it however I haven’t looked back and have been eagrly using up my stockpile of Ecover for the last 6 months to make the switch. Ecover poweder did clean well and is a vegan/cruelty free company but it is worth mentioning that Ecover and it’s sister company Method were sold to SC Johnson and at the time of posting this is still the case. so whilst Ecover do not directly test their products on animals, their profits are going to a company which do not have a great track record with animal rights.
Another peave with the Ecover powder was the amount of space it was taking up. As you can see from the picture one Ecoegg takes up a fraction of the space of the box of powder and the Eco Egg should be good for 10 additional washes
The Eco egg costs around £5 for 50 washes worth of refills so price wise is cheaper
So far my only gripes are with the Ecoegg are that if you have a stupidly large washing machine like me (9kg or bigger) then you will need two eggs. Even still Ecoegg claim that you will save around 40 plastic bottles a year based on one wash a day so as a long term investment you are taking so much plastic out of production. And when you think a lot of the plastic which goes into you recycling bin still ends up on landfill its really worth considering
My other gripe is that you can only wash upto 60 degrees with an Ecoegg- my solution to this is Soapnuts, which incidentally don’t seem to work well for me at low temps so I switch between the two. Soapnuts are a completely natural washing solution and can be used for lots of other uses including in your dishwasher but I have yet to get brave enough to try them for anything other than my clothes
When purchasing second egg to appease my 10kg washing machine ( which i should have got a long time ago rather than trying to cram in as much washing as i possibly could on a weekend – it really doesnt wash your clothes well doing this) I also decided to try their tumble dryer balls which are also Vegan and Cruelty Free which are designed to both soften and scent your clothes and negate the need for fabric softener- again bulky and excess plastic needed. I decided to get two packs on the logic I needed to two eggs and first impressions are that my clothes and towels are much softer without needing to use any fabric softner ( alot of Fabric Softners contain animal fats too- YUK!) I have found this leaves a scent a little too well so I am going to remove the scent sticks from two of the dryer eggs to see if I still have the same great results
Whilst researching EcoEgg I have come arcoss some facts:
Products are never tested on Animals
Vegan
No Harsh Chemicals
Recyclable packaging
Hypoallergenic
reduce tumble drying time by upto 28%
